Pacific Justice Institute 2007 Hall of Shame

Sacramento, CA—As we prepare to look back on 2007, the Pacific Justice Institute has identified a few of the worst instances of hostility toward faith, family and freedom.

1) CA Governor signs SB 777 which allows public school children to arbitrarily choose whether they should be treated as a boy or a girl.

2) Hate Crimes Bill (HR 1592) which could criminalize speech by clergy.  In a mischievous attempt to have it signed into law, the bill was later inserted into a massive, unrelated defense appropriations bill which includes higher pay for the military and better healthcare for wounded soldiers.

3) Sacramento Public Library Authority Board refuses to ban internet access to pornography.   Viewing of this state subsidized access to pornography is in areas where children are present.

4) Yolo County Clerk issues “Certificate of Inequality” to gay and lesbian couples on Valentine’s Day. The certificate says, “I issue this Certificate of Inequality to you because your choice of marriage partner displeases some people whose displeasure is, apparently, more important than principles of equality.”  The certificate concludes with, “May the God of your choice bless you.”

5) School attempts to censor God out of private yearbook ad.  To wish their son well upon his graduation, the parents submitted an ad that included the phrase “may God bless your life.”

6) Public high schools in California have Cross-dressing Day as part of School Spirit week.

7) Over 100 students suspended in Sacramento area schools for wearing t-shirts which quote a Bible verse.

8) Supreme Court refuses to review City of Oakland’s removal of an employee flier because the term “natural family” was deemed homophobic.

9) A CA Assemblywoman, Sally Lieber, with no children of her own, introduces legislation to ban spanking.  She says she got the idea from a law professor at the University of San Francisco, who pointed to European bans on spanking.

10) Red Cross refuses donations of Bibles to California fire victims.

I agree with all of this...except I would put Freddie Oakley's antics at #2 behind the Governor’s signing of SB777. All these items are shameful...and Oakley's was disgraceful (in my humble opinion)

Charlie-san...still in Japan (for a few more days..)

It's interesting Matt... I have quite different opinions from you on most things, but I do like you as a supervisor.

There's a few things in here which I find truly disturbing.

1) The term justice suggests equality, respect, and fairness. Pacific Justice Institute is a misnomer given that they are demonstrably a judgemental, dogmatic institution.

2) As you and they say, access to pornography in public libraries should be banned. This is absurd.

3) Criticism of Freddie Oakley's certificates again. She was making a political statement based upon her views. Matt: how do you view what she did, independent of your view of homosexuality?

4) The statement about students being suspended in Sacramento for wearing shirts quoting the bible is dishonestly misleading. In the incident being referenced, these students wore shirts with anti-gay verses from the Old Testament on them. While the Old Testament has many statements which are viewed as outdated or absurb, discrimination against gays continues. As I'm sure you well know, while freedom of speech is protected by the constitution, hate speech is not.

This is just the tip of the iceberg. That whole article is offensive... Pacific Justice indeed. The Anti-Gay KKK would be a more accurate name. What ever happened to being a religion of tolerance?

Tolerance is like waterboarding....eventually your will to tolerate becomes diminished or even non-existent with the constant "in-your-face" tactics of the pro-homo lobby, politicians, teachers, ect. Parents are beginning to have enough of this garbage.

Oh come now, Vet... Pro-homo lobby? Almost non-existant. There's certainly many large, well-funded anti-homosexual lobbying groups, mostly from the religious right (which I still don't understand, being that distaste for gays is based off the Old Testament, which is full of all sorts of senseless statements and is quite obsolete compared to the New Testament).

However, there's certainly a lot of groups in this country that try to protect people's civil rights. While some may make impractical or irrational demands, they serve the important function of trying to protect citizens from discrimination and other mistreatment.

This country, as a bastion of freedom and justice, should protect its citizens right to self-determination. Part of that means preventing people from harming or unduly compelling other human beings for having different beliefs or ways of life, provided that way of life is, in turn, not harmful to others.

What? The "roll your own" lobby?

Show me one place in Oakley's job description or oath of office that states she is to use government property while she is on government ‘time’ to hand out certificates of inequity. (?)

She is not an elected representative of the people nor is she elected to legislate. She is an elected public servant, elected to safeguard records and documents and insure fare and free elections.

She is completely within her rights to think what she wants and hand-out what she wants on her own time…but not when she is at work! There is lies the problem…. Oakley needs to either run for an elected representative position or do this on her own time and stop making a Circus out of the County Offices!

It will be interesting to see what kind of foolishness she again proposes in the up-coming Valentines Day.

(In my not so humble opinion) Charlie-san, still in Japan

Hell no, I'm not suprised or shocked by the weird and too often profane proposals germinated from the brains of the kinky, far left liberals.. In their minds the only good thing hard working conservatives are good for is paying taxes! After all they need us to fund their weird idiotic over the top dribble...
Anyone, for a excellent cup of COFFEE? I heard the County has purchased the Rolls-Royce of Coffee makers for a cool $91,000.00!

It's pretty interesting what's considered liberal in this country. Conservative, traditionally, meant non-interference in other people's lives and protecting people's freedoms - rather than curbing them and restricting them in the name of patriotism. Minimalistic government and less spending were also ideals of old conservatives. I'm one of those - equal rights, less frivolous spending, etc.

I couldn't agree more about how ludicrous the coffee cart is. At the same time, I doubt we'd agree on much else.

Most people don't realize exactly how far "right" this country is, though. The bane of the republican party, Hilary Clinton, is actually considered a moderate conservative in terms of world politics. Even "extremist" leftists like Gravel and Kucinich are only moderate liberals when put into the frame of global politics.
