This issue has been just under the surface for several years now. Yesterday it started to emerge and by next week it will be a big deal.
This is a really big deal.
Yolo County needs to have a detailed conversation about water. All things water. This is needed for a number of reasons.
1) We have multiple agencies and organizations that deal with the issue from many different angles
2) We have ground water and surface water issues that are very real
3) Yolo County (geographically) is a big part of the state and regional water equation
4) The basic fabric of Yolo County is at risk as a result of some of the conversations occurring at the state and federal level
On Tuesday the discussion starts at the Board of Supervisors meeting. There is going to be some pain for everyone in this discussion but it needs to happen to make sure that we are best positioned as a county on water.
I don't like the way that the issue is being presented but we need to get beyond that and get into the meat of the issue. On Tuesday we probably will have lots of people at the meeting that will feel emotional on the issue. We need to get beyond the emotion and get to the policy points and how we position ourselves.
This blog post is not going to do justice to how important this issue will be in the coming year to Yolo County government and politics. It has the potential to define both. |

Well, lets see, we could dig the Yolo bypass about 8 feet deeper and utilize it as Reservoir/Bypass. Woodland is continually threatened with flooding darn near every year. Not only would this approach help Yolo County but it could also be utilized to control river flows in lean years. I have another idea! How about we figure out ways to retain the water that flows down our creeks, which in turn threaten our communities in Yolo county. Gee , now that sounds like a win- win proposition. Just think ,we could solve our flooding problems as well as our water problems in one fell swoop. The reason why this issue has never been solved is because we have too many agencies and organizations trying to solve the same problem. Oh well, I guess if everything was that easy we wouldn’t need all those agencies and organizations, along with their armies of consultants!!!
Thanks, and keep up the good work.
