Good grief Charlie Brown

So on Friday at lunch I am sitting there eating my Pad Thai #40 after finishing off my chicken strips with peanut sauce when Dave Flory says people think I am McLovin/Politiclast. That was funny.
I thought to myself -- I need to do a post on that.
So tonight I went upstairs to check on my kids and sat down in my basement office. I almost choked when I read Politiclast. No. No. No. USC is my time. I have two degrees from there and watch every single game of the football season. I even get an e-mail from scout.com when USC lands a recruit in football or basketball.
Then I read this. Go get your own team.
I tried to state my objection to politiclast/mcLovin on the site but got an error message.
Wrong. Wrong. Wrong.
1) I am happy to defend the future Vice President of the United States.
2) The electoral college is not something that is new to me.
3) I am arguing against someone that does not even exist. It is kind of like the War on Terror.
Go get your own University.

USC v. Virginia
Saturday, August 30, 2008 ::
0 Comments
At 12:30 (Woodland time) today the world should stop spinning for a couple hours.
The University of Southern California plays the University of Virginia. This should not be too hard of a game for USC. I just hope they are not looking too far ahead to the match up in two weeks against Ohio State. That will be a big time football game.
My prediction --- USC 35, Virginia 10. I also predict that three players from UVA leave the field on stretchers courtesy of the three USC linebackers and safety Taylor Mays. Mays is a frightening man.
Fight On!
Final Score: 52-7. Worst loss for Virginia in more than 20 years. This game was over early. Bring on Ohio State.

Electoral College is what matters
Friday, August 29, 2008 ::
1 Comments
Some of you need to break out your US Government text books and take a look at how we elect our President. Popular vote matters very little.
The person that will serve as our next President will be the ticket that gets 270 or more electoral votes. John McCain can lose the state of new York by one vote or 1 million. It does not matter. Same result. Obama can win Illinois by a huge margin -- it doesn't matter. One vote is all that matters.
The Presidency will be decided by a small number of states. Generally they are -- Ohio, Florida, Virginia, Michigan, Colorado, Virginia, Nevada, New Mexico, North Carolina, and New Hampshire.
What do these states have in common? They have a large number of hunters, several have large faith constituencies, and they all have rural areas with a large number of voters. These people will love the VP nominee.
The one of these states that McCain has the most trouble in is Michigan. Other than that I think he wins all of the others.
It does not matter what is happening in California. What we see. The people of these states are receiving an avalanche of messaging that Californians have never seen.
Let me give you an example. In 2000 when Governor Bush was going after the Republican nomination for President California was given 65,000 yard signs to spread out all over the state. South Carolina started with 200,000 yard signs and more came later.

Today at lunch we awarded Christine Shewmaker her plaque as the Woodlander of the Month for August. She has been active in solar and environmental causes in Woodland and Yolo County.
You can see her here with Woodland Mayor Skip Davies, Supervisor Chamberlain, and me. Dotty, Dave, and Patricia joined us as well. We have recognized some great people with this award.

I think McCain is going to win
Friday, August 29, 2008 ::
4 Comments
I do love the VP choice for McCain.
The part i don't get is these people that think she is not qualified. If she isn't qualified then certainly Governor Bill Clinton, Governor George Bush, Governor Jimmy Carter, and Governor Michael Dukakis were not qualified either. The Governor of Alaska has a great deal of authority. Certainly more so than the Governor of Texas yet we heard very few comments about Bush not being qualified to be President in 2008.
Let me also add that she has had more executive experience than Biden and Obama combined. Some may say it is good to have Biden close by -- but he has never run anything. He has been part of a legislative body for the past 36 years. Obama has never really run anything. Five years ago he represented fewer people than Lois Wolk.
The key thing here is that over the past two months I have worried about Obama walking into this thing. Now I actually think McCain is going to win. We met the next Vice President of the United States today.

Awesome pick

Yesterday I was doing a television shoot with a Fire Captain friend of mine. He told me that Governor Sarah Palin was the obvious choice for Vice President. I said -- "Who?"
After spending a few hours learning about her I have concluded she is perfect. Stand by Joe Biden.
She has more experience as an executive than Obama and Biden combined. If Bill Clinton was prepared to be Commaner in Chief -- then she is too.
Great choice. I am looking forward to her inauguration.
Politiclast -- I will get you some good seats next to Jenn and me.

Seriously -- what gives?

I just sat down at my desk at work. The home page is rexroad.com so I checked out the viewing stats.
Over the past ten days we have probably averaged close to 10,000 page views. That is way up.
This morning when I sat down at 0908 we had 338 people visitors on line at that moment and had racked up 5,767 page views. It is not even 0930 yet.
It is probably the hearing aid people planning their attack on Yolo County.

Box to blow up #2

I have suggested another box for the Governor and Legislature to blow up. You can read about it here.
Don't tell me about tax increases being necessary when we are spending state money on this kind of stuff. If this doesn't go then state government will never be reformed.

Democrats are making a mistake
Tuesday, August 26, 2008 ::
4 Comments
In my opinion the Democrats are not making enough of a contrast between Senator Obama and Senator McCain.
They spend an equal amount of time talking about Obama's credentials for office as they do about Senator McCain. They should be on the attack the entire time. It seems to me that every time I think they might have the Republicans down for the county they let go.
This race would probably be over if Richardson, Biden, Edwards, or Gore were the nominee. They came down to a choice between the only two candidates that could lose in November. Nice work.
Senator McCain is the only Republican that still would have a chance to win at this point....and he is doing well enough to make this a game. In fact, he is doing so well I am planning to be in Washington DC in January to watch McCain become the next President of the United States.
Here is the one thing I am worried about. President Clinton tomorrow night. That guy is tough and has a sharp knife. He may be the one that changes the entire dynamic of the race. If he talks for more than 45 minutes --- he will have gone on for too long and lost the opportunity. So far so good.
Thank you to everyone in Denver.

I like my Crocs
Tuesday, August 26, 2008 ::

All four of the Rexroads have Crocs. I even wore mine to church last wee - that was kind of a scandal.
The NPR Business Story of the Day last week was about Crocs losing market share. They are losing a lot of market share.
The amazing thing is that they even have a website for those people that hate crocs -- here it is.
I am way too old to care what people think about my shoes -- but I like crocs. I will be wearing mine when they come back into style in 15 years.

I am willing to bet that this project in Colusa County does not get built as long as the Yolo County General Plan continues on schedule with up to 7,500 homes in the Dunnigan area.
You can read this article in the Colusa Sun-Herald.
It just will not happen and they don't have the interchange at I-505 and I-5. That is worth millions.

Denver -- Obama and Pelosi
Monday, August 25, 2008 ::
0 Comments
From my viewpoint ---
Michelle Obama -- A. She is really good. I'm not sure why we expected her to speak but she did a great job.
Speaker Nancy Pelosi -- F. This woman makes my ears bleed. She is just terrible.
Senator Kennedy -- A. This guy really believes his stuff. I disagree but admire his passion.
I am betting that President Clinton will be the one that we talk about for a long time after the convention.
Let's cut a deal. Republicans don't allow Rush Limbaugh anywhere near a microphone and the Democrats do the same with Pelosi. The world would be a better place.
I just watched Michelle Obama again on MSNBC. She was really really good. She is smart, beautiful, very composed. The brother basketball coach introduction was a nice touch. Pelosi is not something I will subject myself too again.

New Olympic Sports
Monday, August 25, 2008 ::
1 Comments
Now that the Olympis have concluded I would like to offer the following thoughts on some changes that would improve television ratings.
The Olympics are losing market share to the extreme games. I would like to consolidate some things. It would be more efficient and more entertaining.
First -- get rid of synchronized swimming, rhythmic gymnastics, and team diving.
Second, take the gymnastics high bar and stick it on the 10m platform. The gym-divers then do the bar routine as usual on the platform but the dismount is 10 meter below into the water. You want to make a sport out of doing two people at the same time - great.
Third, no mountain biking like they have now. You get everyone out somewhere with bikes, water, and maps. Put the medals 20 miles away and let the people race for them. No course. Just biking and people. First one there wins gold.... and so on.
Fourth, horse stuff. I think we need to bring back jousting. Forget fencing. That is boring. Stick the people up on a horse and turn them loose with sabers.
Fifth. I find the high jump boring. Stick these athletes on the 3 meter spring board and see how high they can go. That would be fun to watch. Put the bar way up there and see who can clear it.
What makes a sport Olympic is that it happens on every continent or something like that. Do people really get together in a pool or lake and see how fast they can swim the 200 meter butterfly. Not a chance. I want to know how far these people can swim under water. That is what Marines and SEALS do. That should be a swimming event. Michael Phelps -- let's see how many laps you can do without taking a breath.
Seventh, slam dunk contest. Those volleyball players are stars. Let's put the rim up there and let some people throw down. We would have some monster jams on a 10 foot rim. Kobe skips the dunk contest at the NBA All-Star Game. Put a gold medal on the line and he would be there. I think a volleyball player still might win.
Eighth, skipping rocks. Why not? They do that everywhere. I want to know how many times the people can do that. Put a gold medal on it.
Ninth, hot dog eating. We need it. That Japanese kid and Joe Chestnut from San Jose need to go for it with a gold medal on the line.
Tenth and finally, skydiving. Turn the light on and let the people race to the gold medal. You would be rewarded for pulling low and landing accurately. That would be some drama.
The tv ratings would go way up.
Other games considered but rejected -- beer bongs, spitting, free throws combined with archery, surfing, grocery bagging, blogging, NASCAR, and diaper changing. Please share other ideas you might have.

Ok -- many of you have pointed out how lame I am. It was just some people having dinner in their orchard. That was immediately prior to lunch and I was hungry. Here is the website -- they should have invited us all over for dinner.

Off shore oil drilling -- unpopular?
Saturday, August 23, 2008 ::
1 Comments
Jenn and I just sat down to watch the Biden announcement. Actually, I sat down to watch it. Jenn was reading a book.
They just said Biden has taken the unpopular stand of opposing off-shore oil drilling. Unpopular? I oppose off shore oil drilling. Until just a few months ago most everyone did. This gas price shock we are having should not change our policies regarding off shore oil drilling. Now everyone is throwing this policy over board.
We should be drilling in ANWAR. This is frozen tundra that should be mined. In the case of the California coast -- we don't need to do this. It comes at a risk that is too high with an alternative that is so very obvious.

Olympics
Saturday, August 23, 2008 ::
0 Comments
I have really enjoyed the Olympics.
Some of the sports like team handball I think are awesome. This is what I don't understand. Softball will not be a sport in 2010 but team diving will be.
Team diving should not be an Olympic sport. Diving alone should be but not team diving. For any reason that can be stated for team diving we could also have team hurdles in track, team high bar in gymnastics (that would actually be fun to watch), or team BMX. My conclusion on this came when I saw two divers that both did the same thing wrong and the announcer said something like -- "They both did it wrong, but they did it wrong in the same way so their synchronization score will be good." Nope. That is silly.
Throwing yourself off the platform and doing cool stuff in the air is fun to watch and seem challenging. I want people to work on doing as much cool stuff in the air as possible -- forget the team work.
Keep softball. Get rid of team diving and rhythmic gymnastics. Add sky diving.

I always thought Senator Biden was smart. If he was the nominee this race for President would be a whole lot different.

5) a really good attack dog
Good choice.

Sacramento Power & Influence

The Sacramento Bee alert called my attention to this list in Sacramento Magazine of the 100 most influential people in Sacramento.
I find it interesting that not one member of the Board of Supervisors or City Council is on this list.
That really is the way it should be. I get a kick out of lists like this that load up on people that are elected officials. I belive that many times a person can shape their community by not being in public office.

Sac Builders' Exchange Event

Tonight Jenn and I went to Wilton for an event put on by the Sacramento Builders' Exchange. Great event. Great people. Great food. Jenn even loved it.
These folks have been really cool to work with on things.
Met a guy that told me he got pulled over twice in the same day on Gibson Road in Woodland. I am sure it was Officer Krause.
The only other Yolo County person I saw there was the guy running against Cabaldon for Mayor of West Sacramento.
I had several people come up to thank me for writing that piece in the Sacramento Bee this weekend on the needle exchange. That was cool.

Donors may make contributions at any branch of the bank, which has offices in downtown Davis, Woodland, Winters and Dixon.

New toilets at my office
Tuesday, August 19, 2008 ::
0 Comments
So a few months ago, in an effort to be sustainable, my business put in low flow toilets. Well this weekend at some point one of them may have been low flow -- but it did flow and flow and flow. We had hundreds of gallons of water everywhere.
It ruined all the wood flooring. It dampened all the carpets. The water crept up to 14 inches up the drywall in a couple places.
So now we have about 40 commercial drying fans going for about 72 hours. The wood floor has all been torn up and will be replaced. Every desk in the place I think has been moved. Most every one of my employees is trying to work from home.
The insurance company has actually been great. The clean up company has been just amazing.
It has been a long week -- and it is only Tuesday. More blogging later.

Sharps Containers
Sunday, August 17, 2008 ::
0 Comments
So on Friday I got to see one. Did not really know what to expect but it turns out that they come in all sizes.
I actually touched one and did not get killed. I even set it on my kids play table. After I took the picture I left it there. My kids didn't even seem to care. Jenn was the one that eventually ended up moving it.
If we are going to have a needle exchange program then we should have these containers to try to recover some of the 11,000 needles that are floating around out there.
I actually do think they should be anywhere we have a history of finding needles. That includes city parks, county buildings, shelters...hunt where the ducks are.
The needle exchange program still seems crazy to me. It always will. Helping an addict facilitate the injection of poison into their body under the banner of public health is simply wrong to me.
However, if we are going to have the program I think my family and friends are safer to have these Sharps containers available in parks than without them.
This one seems pretty simple. It locks. The Diet Coke is there for size reference. It could easily be attached to the wall.
When it is full you can pull the liner out and safely cap it. The part you don't see is the box that you put the red thing in to mail it for safe disposal. Once the needle goes inside everyone is safer.
The more I learn about these things the more I am finding that they are very common. I never realized how many people take shots daily for medication.
Here is some information on the company that makes the container.

I just posted a comment on the People's Vanguard of Davis that I expect will lead to some name calling. Oh well.
Here is the original post and all the comments.
I think some of these people from Davis need to put up or shut up. Woodland has stepped up to provide land use for many of the things people from Davis advocate for. Affordable housing. Housing for people with mental illness. The Wayfarer Center. Summer House.
It seems to me that Woodland is doing some heavy lifting that some other communities in Yolo County are not doing. I am calling them on it. I look forward to the reaction.

You are a big bald.....
Sunday, August 17, 2008 ::
2 Comments
So on Friday afternoon Jenn and I took the kids to the Fair. They had all eaten dinner and we were headed there for rides and ice cream.
Abbie and I did the ferris wheel. Adam got to see clowns. Adam and Abbie rode on the trucks in the kiddie section. Life was great.
Since I had not eaten yet we split up. Jenn took the kids to the merry go round and then for ice cream at the Methodist church booth. I headed for tri-tip at the FFA booth. After getting my tri-tip combo I ran into Yolo Cal Vet and his Posse. I downed the excellent tri-tip and started working on my melon cup.
As I walking north along the asphalt path toward my family and ice cream some idiot strolls right up next to me and says, "You are one big bad bald Mother F***er."
My response, while shoving melon down my throat, was "What?"
He did not back track at all. He said "I am a little stacked right now but your head is big and bald.". Now I figure I might have a problem. I am eating -- which is a very bad time to bother me. Further, if this guy makes me drop my melon cup I am probably going to jail shortly after that.
I stand up a little straighter and stare right at him with my mouth full of melon. His hands are free and he seems more inclined to hold onto the straps of his backpack. This is going to end quickly if it has to.
Now that I have his attention he cuts behind me to leave. Life is getting better because I think he is probably headed away from me and my melon cup.
Then the guy clips the heel of my sandal wit his foot. I am not sure if he did it on purpose or not but I know this -- it was a big deal for me. A big deal because of my reaction. I am not an athlete any more. If 315 pounds were above my chest today it would cut me in half. 26.2 miles would get finished sometime after the fair ended. I have not had anyone throw a punch at me for longer than Abbie has been alive. I am 40 YEARS OLD.
Here is the key distinction between my reaction today compared to what my reaction would have been ten years ago. My primary concern was really not my safety. It was my melon cup. It was good melon.
Had I been with my family my reaction also probably would have been much different. If this tweaker would have actually sent me to the ground my reaction would have been far different. After all, I probably would have spilled my melon cup.
My main point with this post is that I need to remember that I am 40 year old middle age man walking around in short and sandals at the Yolo County Fair. I'm not a warrior anymore. You need a soldier of fortune then hire someone else. Many people are now more qualified than I am. If you need someone to blog for you, pick up trash, do a book review, or engage in some kind of political battle -- I am your guy. Just give me a good melon cup and watch me go to work.

2) my wife saw the picture of her and blasted me for letting other people see it. Bad hubby.
Anyway...the Realist has cropped Jenn out of it and added a few items......see his version here.

Ok. I actually didn't catch Duane throwing trash out of his truck. That picture just turned out way better than I had hoped.
Duane and I were out hunting trash on Friday afternoon. I am working on an effort to get rid of some of the large amounts of trash in the rural parts of my district. It is pretty bad.
Duane of course knew where it all was.
His business was out there in the Elkhorn area going full steam so I got a lesson on straw too. More later on trash and the plan to get it taken care of.

I got an e-mail from someone in Davis that has created a community site for the people of Davis. I get these from time to time.
This one seems especially good. It seems easy to use and has the information I would be looking for.
Check it out.

Here are pictures of Dotty and Dave working on Backpacks for Kids.
Dave is saying "Man, we got some good stuff here but I can't wait until this is over."
Dotty is saying, "Ok. Dave is inside the storage shed. If lock him in there and drive away what am I going to do with his truck?"
