This morning I had early meetings with the Chamber of Commerce and at the county. I got to the county first and saw the Daily Democrat there.
Today is the announcement of Best Of......
I looked at every page. Some I agree with. Some I don't.
The one that blew me away is that the Best Hot Dog in Woodland is at the Arco at Road 102. What in the world? Come on. Now granted I have never eaten a hot dog from there but I will be getting one soon to check it out.

What a shame - Country Oaks
Wednesday, October 28, 2009 ::
1 Comments
When I was in high school I spent two summers as a lifeguard at Country Oaks athletic club. When I was training to go to boot camp I worked out at Country Oaks athletic club. I really loved the place.
Some people focus on racquetball so they like Cross Courts. I get it.
For me I liked the two pools, the basketball court, the larger weight room upstairs and the open area that was provided by the tennis courts. If your focus was tennis Country Oaks was the place to go.
Thousands of recreational hours each week/month were spent at Country Oaks.
When I got a call in 2006 from a family on Gum Avenue about the possibility of the club being sold I thought that was crazy. When I looked into the zoning and found out that the owners has the option and then did the math on the number of homes that could be placed there it suddenly became real.
A group of people tried to get the city to step in and prevent the transition but there was not much we could do.
What a shame that the club has been closed and torn down and now just remains an empty field of weeds.
It is now hidden away behind the gate but with thousands of hours of lost recreation for the people of Woodland. What a waste.

Epidemic Fear

One of my business partners sent me this article. His child had a major scare with H1N1.
If we are going to talk about nationalizing health care and it is a right of people to get health care and others have to pay for it -- then how come I don't hear people calling for the power of the government to be used to mandate shots so an epidemic does not spread.
Here is the article.

Third Annual Festival of Trees Coming Soon
Woodland’s Gibson House hosts vendors, Santa and a live auction
Woodland, CA – The Historic Gibson House, located at 512 Gibson Road in Woodland, will be hosting its third annual Festival of Trees the weekend of December 4th – 6th. Please join the Yolo community for this magical event and help celebrate the spirit of the holiday season while helping support educational programming at the Yolo County Historical Museum.
On Friday, December 4th, a special preview will be held from 3 – 6 p.m. for holiday shoppers to spend time examining the beautiful trees and other holiday decorations that have been crafted by local decorators and groups. The auction sheets will be available for early bids, though to be assured of getting what they want, bidders need to be present at the Saturday Gala.
Saturday, December 5th, from 6:30 – 9 p.m. is the Festival Gala! All the holiday items will be available for sale at a silent and live auction. Created by local decorators and groups, these holiday treats get more beautiful – and fun – every year! Complimentary hors d’oeuvres and wine will be served, and there will be musical entertainment. Tickets are $35 or $60/couple.
The Gibson House will also be a part of the Meals on Wheels Dickens in the Valley home tour on Saturday.
On Santa Sunday, December 6th, the Gibson House will be open from 1 – 4 p.m. Admission is free. Santa will be on hand to greet children, who will also be able to make a Christmas craft. There will be holiday items for sale, as well as any trees or decorations that weren’t auctioned on Saturday night. Refreshments will be served, and docents will be on hand to give tours of the house.
Local craftsmen interested in donating a decorated tree or wreath are asked to email the press contact above by November 2nd. The donated pieces will be auctioned off at the gala and all proceeds will go to the Gibson House fund to support educational programming at the Yolo County Historical Museum.
The Gibson House is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is the only historic home in Yolo County open to the public. It has an active group of tour and school docents and a green thumb group that propagates plants for the grounds and regular plant sales.
The Gibson House also hosts community events each year: the annual May Festival, Backpacks for Kids in the summer, and an Oktoberfest. It is available as a rental for family and community events.

My favorite program is up for yearly review on Tuesday. I really can't believe that we didn't have this program two years ago -- yet despite all the budget cuts in the county this program has not received even a one penny reduction.
Yolo County continues to spend $100,000 a year on subsidizing the injection of poison into human bodies.
It is agenda item 4.05 this Tuesday if you are interested in reading about it.

I get it --but don't agree
Sunday, October 25, 2009 ::
1 Comments
One of my colleagues and I have a disagreement about once a month on a central topic. It is the expenditure of state and federal money.
I would like the size of state and federal government to shrink dramatically. Some programs and departments would be completely eliminated if I had my choice. The savings would be passed on to the taxpayers with lower taxes. This is where we both agree.
Where we don't agree is what to do with these programs as long as they continue to operate.
His position is generally (although I have not seen a specific vote against many projects on these grounds) to not support spending these monies locally because of the objection to the overall program.
I feel exactly the opposite. If the people of Woodland are going to get taxed in order to fund a program I want as much of the money spent in Woodland as possible. For example, I voted against some of the state school construction bonds a few years ago. When they passed despite my objection, billions of dollars were going to be taken from all Californians (including people from Woodland) and spent. I want Woodland to get as much of that money as possible. In fact, I would like it all to be spent here. I see no reason to allow the schools of San Francisco and Los Angeles to be improved on our dime while we sit it out for moral reasons.
This is actually something that I think is part of my job in this community. I want to maximize the benefits that can come to the people I represent. Not with new programs but by putting the community in the best light possible to get as much out of existing programs as possible.
Curious about your thoughts.

Great Editorial in the Democrat on Pot
Sunday, October 25, 2009 ::

I am using part of my Sunday to catch up on reading. This editorial is exactly right.
People are already contacting me saying the law has changed. No it hasn't. The enforcement of it has.
If the federal government wants to change the law then it needs to push a bill through Congress.
The current policy (before and after the memo) do nothing but leave lots of people (users, sellers, cops, prosecutors, and policy makers) in no man's land.

I just got done reading a piece the Daily Democrat about a Yolo County Judge being appointed to oversee election disputes. Wow. That sounds interesting.
Wonder where this judge is going to monitor elections?
Could be Afghanistan. That place is crazy right now. Karzai agreed to a run off.
Could be some place that does not have a history of fair and open elections like Eastern Europe or South America.
Could be some place that has a history of civil rights violations. That would make sense. Good to have a judge on standby.
Nope. You can read the article here to reveal the mystery location. This judge probably is not going to be sleeping too much with all the responsibility involved with this.
In other breaking news -- Jenn has appointed me the family commissioner to oversee disputes involving the trampoline. We actually have an incident every day involving this.

Another veto
Thursday, October 15, 2009 ::
1 Comments
To the Members of the California State Senate:
I am returning Senate Bill 212 without my signature.
While I grappled with this issue, I came to the conclusion that
nothing in current law prohibits school districts from cleaning and
sterilizing wrestling equipment. Furthermore, during the time I was
working diligently on providing an acceptable water plan for the
Central Valley, I was able to pin down the fact that the
Superintendent of Public Instruction already has the authority to
develop information and guidelines regarding the prevention of
communicable diseases on school campuses. Therefore, this bill is
unnecessary.
The Legislature needs to wrestle with whether it will continue to
pass bills like this one, that current law sufficiently addresses, or
whether it will go to the mat on pressing issues such as water
infrastructure, tax reform, and federal education funding.
For these reasons, I am unable to sign this bill.
Sincerely,
Arnold Schwarzenegger

Distance Signs
Thursday, October 15, 2009 ::
0 Comments
I have always wanted to understand what the measurement is when you see highway signs and the mileage listed. For example -- Woodland 12. 12 miles to what? Road 102? Main Street? Skip's house? Ludy's?
Here is the rule according THE MAN.
Here's the answer, per our California Manual on Uniform Traffic Control
Devices (CA MUTCD).
For all highways, here is the federal guidance (there is no specific
California state policy that supplants or clarifies this language):
(Embedded image moved to file: pic04205.jpg)
Sentences that are highlighted in yellow are the two key concepts to
identifying the distance point to a destination community. Even so, it
must be a somewhat flexible policy such that it is determined on a
case-by-case basis by the jurisdiction. If you're reading this on a
Blackberry, you may not be able to read the embedded graphic, so I will
repeat the key guidance (in text):
Guidance:
The distance shown should be selected on a case-by-case basis by
the jurisdiction that owns the road or by statewide policy. A
well-defined central area or central business district should be used
where one exists. In other cases, the layout of the community should be
considered in relation to the highway being signed and the decision
based on where it appears that most drivers would feel that they are in
the center of the community in question.
The top name on the Distance sign should be that of the next place
on the route having a post office or a railroad station, a route number
or name of an intersected highway, or any other significant geographical
identity. The bottom name on the sign should be that of the next major
destination or control city. If three destinations are shown, the middle
line should be used to indicate communities of general interest along
the route or important route junctions.
<end quote>
Specific to freeways, here is the Section on "Distance Signs:" Note that
the distance to a control city should be to the destination, itself (see
language in Chapter 2D, referenced above), and not the distance to the
freeway exit.
(Embedded image moved to file: pic08507.jpg)
<end quote>
From this, the specific instructions for a 3-line destination distance
sign.
Top Line: The focus on top line of a listing of 3 destinations is the
distance to the next specific interchange exit.
2nd Line: (If used) should be used to identify communities of general
interest, or major traffic generators (such as Candlestick Park, or AT&T
Park, for example) located on or immediately adjacent to the route one is
traveling,
OR, Distance signs may be used to give maximum information about
communities served by the route.
3rd, or bottom line: SHALL contain the name and distance to a control city
(if any) that has national significance for travelers using the route. The
guidance that follows is general and the recommended practice is to provide
the actual distance to the destination point and not to the freeway exit
that a traveler must take to get to that city center, central business
district, or:
" . . . where it appears that most drivers would feel that they are in
the center of the community in question."
So, for I-5 Northbound from Sacramento, the next control city north of
Sacramento is Redding. The distance is to a city center location in
Redding, not to the middle freeway exit on I-5 to Redding. Obviously, as
one approaches the City of Redding, the distance to specific interchanges
will appear on the top line of the sign, and for the exit direction sign,
and that mostly becomes the focus of the road user.
I hope this adequately answers your question.

Lois Wolk
Tuesday, October 13, 2009 ::

I have to tell you that I am not a huge fan of the Legislature right now. It is my opinion that it is full of lots of people that lack any kind of political courage at all.
You know who that does not apply to? Senator Lois Wolk.
Yeah, yeah, yeah. She is way too liberal for me. Her voting record on the Chamber of Commerce bills is so bad I can hardly see straight. I get all that.
You know what Lois did do? She was an absolute hero for local government during her first year in the State Senate. Hero.
Say whatever you want about her politics on some things (I certainly will) but she walks the walk on local government and deserves our thanks.
Lois stood up to her party leadership on several issues this past year that probably cost her some points in her own Caucus. She paid a price that few of her colleagues would be willing to pay for issues that they believe in. I respect that.
If you see her around Woodland -- thank her for her courage in defending local government.

Bike Path -- keeps on rolling
Tuesday, October 13, 2009 ::
0 Comments
I was told by someone close to me -- "What makes you think you have a chance of getting a bike path built between Woodland and Davis? This is something that people have been working on for years."
I get the question. The answer actually has little to do with me and much more to do with the context in which the issue is being considered.
It is my belief that this region has the right people in the right places for this issue to happen.
Our job right now is just to get this at the place where someone else can sweep in, adopt the issue and take all the glory. As soon as they want it -- we will happily give it to them.
It is all about the project getting done.

Veto - BAM
Sunday, October 11, 2009 ::
0 Comments
To the Members of the California State Senate:
I am returning Senate Bill 315 without my signature.
This is potentially one of these least substantive education bills approved by the Legislature this year. This bill authorizes a school district to establish and maintain a “walking school bus” defined as a group of students walking to or from school under the supervision of an adult.
Nothing under current law prohibits a district from allowing students to walk to and from school as a group under the supervision of an adult.
Common sense should not require Legislative authorization.
For these reasons, I am unable to sign this bill.
Sincerely,
Arnold Schwarzenegger

Thoughts on Sammie
Friday, October 09, 2009 ::
1 Comments
Dear Woodland:
Chris Cassinerio who later became Chris Hartsfield was in my class growing up. We don't communicate really except by Facebook. To my knowledge I don't think I ever met her daughter Sammie.
The Rexroad family has prayed for Sammie Hartsfield for more than a year now. Abbie and Adam tend to adopt people in their prayers. All three Sammies, Kingsley Melton, and even the wrestling match at Pioneer High school have made their lists of people and things to pray for.
Jenn and I have dealt with numerous questions from Abbie and Adam about the Sammies. Some that don't really have good answers. Some provide great foundations for teaching about life and our faith.
Today was a bad day because of the passing of a little girl I have never met. I am really hurt and I don't have a good explanation why. Part of it is surely that hundreds if not thousands of people in Woodland adopted this little girl in their hearts to root for her and her family. I was one of them. We wanted them to win. We wanted to believe that something so cruel could not happen to someone so innocent and pure.
One other part of my emotional vesting in this little girl is a little more selfish. I didn't want it to happen to anyone -- but it made me so thankful for the health of my own kids. That is about a selfish as you can get but it is honest. This is a little strange for me. I really don't care about taking beatings. I would rather take it than watch someone else deal with it. In this case I would do whatever it took to protect my family from this. The part I feel good about is that Sammie and her struggle made me appreciate the good things that God has given to me. I really need to be more thankful on a regular basis.
Here is one thing I want you all to consider about Sammie or anyone else. If we are measured by our impact on others in this world then some of the little stupid things we worry so much about really are not important. We waste a ton of emotional energy on some things that just are not important.
Who in our community has touched more people than Sammie Hartsfield? Seriously. Who has been the reason for more kids to be hugged or held, prayers to be offered, spouses to be appreciated, and serious self-reflection than that little girl? I can't name them. I hope that when my days on this earth are done I can touch just 1% of the people that this little girl did in a positive way.
It is my hope that we do not waste the lessons that can be learned from the pain that she and her family endured. My prayers today are for her family and that the rest of us don't waste the contribution that a little girl made to Woodland.

Dear Woodland Traffic and Parking Officers ----
I have very good information from a solid source indicating that you are going to fill your dunk tank tomorrow with warm water from the fire department.
What a bunch of pathetic pansies.
I freeze my nuts off each year at Backpacks for Kids in that dunk tank. Jim Smith, Art Pimentel, Jeff Reisig, and Mark Deven have all done the duty.
The people of Woodland paid good money for those tickets to dunk you. I did not pay $20 for six balls to dunk you in a hot tub. There is an implied contract that you suffer cold water when you are dunked.
What a bunch of weak sisters. Officers Krause, Officer Ruiz --- come on. Man up.
Someone needs to check the temperature in that thing tomorrow or this is consumer fraud. Reisig will be all over it.

I think this is great. The Woodland motor and parking officers are going to be in a dunk tank on Friday to raise money for relay for life. The event will run for 10am until 2pm in Heritage Plaza.
You can get 3 balls for $10.
For all of you that are frustrated about getting tickets (speeding or parking) in Woodland here is your chance to take out some of your aggression and support a good cause.
I bought two tickets and got $2 off a BBQ sandwich at Ludy's.
For more information contact Woodland PD Sgt. Steve Guthrie at (530) 661-7864.
This is awesome.

SB 676 (Wolk)
Tuesday, October 06, 2009 ::
1 Comments
Check out this article from Los Angeles about Mel Gibson getting his DUI expunged from his record.
Senator Lois Wolk is the author of SB 676. This bill would allow the county to charge the actual cost of expunging his record. Why should the families of Los Angeles County be subsidizing Mel Gibson from the general fund. This is crazy.
Mel Gibson was the one that engaged in this behavior. Mel Gibson does not server a subsidy. Mel Gibson should pay the full cost of this governmental act.
SB 676 fixes this.

I don't go up the Capay Valley much. I am not a gaming person so the casino is not really my thing.
The last probably ten times I have gone up there I have wanted to stop at the Roadtrip Bar & Grill. I am actually sitting her now. It is in the town of Capay.
So two weeks ago on a Sunday evening Jenn and I took a drive and decided to head up there for desert. We sat down an talked for maybe an hour. We had a wonderful dessert. When the bill came we we could not belive it. It was like $6....and it was great. We left a large tip because the people were so nice.
I am now sitting up here watching the USC game. The Rexroads are camping tonight and I took a break to watch the game. This place is spotless...I like clean. A really nice lady names Rochelle has been wonderful in serving my dinner. The staff here is really nice. That is all great.
Here is the great part. I just had a rib eye steak. It was really good. I am a simple guy so I never like a bunch of crazy stuff for sides. I got sliced avocado and sliced tomato. Excellent. Key lime pie for desert. no complaints.
Worth the drive from Woodland....and USC is winning 10-0. Life is good.

Who’s Who in America?
Who’s Who in the World?
Who’s coming to The Blue Wing Gallery… Kenneth Potter that’s who!
Meet Kenneth Potter and view an extraordinary exhibit from this diversified artist. Opening reception Friday, October 2, 2009 from 6-9pm. Mr. Potter will be on hand to greet the guests and to sign books and prints.
Kenneth Potter has too many accomplishments to list in a mere press release; however we must include his induction into the Marquis Who’s Who in the World2010 Edition. Because of his outstanding achievements his biographical profile will be featured along with 50,000 of the most accomplished men and women from around the globe and across ALL fields of endeavor. This honor is a testament to his hard work and dedication to success.
This exhibit is a curator’s dream; the selected pieces cover a large spectrum of time. The oil is still drying on some paintings while others were finished 20+ years ago but look fresh because Kenneth never repeats himself in his artwork, he continues to take chances. He is and will remain a student of art. This may seem like a contradiction as he is an accomplished artist, well versed in his craft and as an instructor. However, Kenneth is always experimenting with technique. He continues learning and growing with each finished art piece. In my opinion the artists of today have nothing new on Kenneth. He is either so far ahead of them with his latest creations or he is matching them step for step. His piercing insight keeps his pieces on the cutting edge and the painstaking attention to detail in his exquisitely rendered paintings leaves nothing to be desired.
I am not sure of Potter’s exact age and it doesn’t matter except to say that this is another contradiction, if I did not know him I would gather by his enthusiasm and energy that I was conversing with a much younger man. However, even in his presence I could be fooled by his mischievously boyish grin. I may even be enticed to call him Kenny, but his accomplishments and talent command that he be addressed with the respect that he deserves. So with that I’d like to say, thank you Mr. George Kenneth Potter for giving The Blue Wing Gallery the honor of this Extraordinary Exhibit. Thank you for allowing us into your studio; it was a treat of a lifetime.
