Woodland Fireworks
Posted 7/5/2008 @ 7:52 PM :: 1 Comments |
So last night the Rexroads get home from cousin Ian's 4th birthday party in Granite Bay. Abbie and Adam are worn out. Jenn and I stick them in their pajamas, brush their teeth, and they are out cold.
So I turn on the WAVE to watch Dotty. I like Dotty --no I love Dotty. She is the MC for the fireworks and I want to root her on.
Everything is going great. She interviews the guy from the new cable provider -- The Wave (note: Thank God Charter is gone.), a young woman that is going to be a freshman at Woodland High School gets her two cents in. Life is good.
Then I see she is going to interview Art Pimentel. Art is dressed nice. He has a collared shirt on. Dotty is dressed in the traditional 4th of July T-shirt. Life is still good.
Then Dotty tells us that she made Art spit out his gum before he went on television. That seemed like tha good thing to do....right up until she shows us that she has it IN HER HAND.
I almost fell off the sofa.
Here is the really bad part.....right after that I am told Art PUT IT BACK IN HIS MOUTH AND STARTED CHEWING IT AGAIN. NOW THAT IS JUST WRONG.
I am asking Dr. Hinton to pay them each a visit. They probably both need rabies shots. |
Where do they find these people?

There are a couple businesses around that just have outstanding corporate culture.
Some that jump to mind are Nordstrom's and In-n-Out. They are outstanding. Where do you find some kid to be happy about cranking potatoes through a machine right in front of the drive thru lane with a smile?
Here in Woodland I have a couple examples.
Marble Slab near Bel-Air is one. Every time I go in there I have some nice young person greet me and help me increase my waist size. They are always well mannered and very professional. I was just there. That is what prompted this post. They are great.
My second example is Corner Drug. They are great. Lisa and every single person that works there is always so kind.
Another example I have is Dutch Bros. Coffee. They are a little "different" but I think they really care about their customers.
My final favorite is OSH. I come in there with the dumbest questions. They always have an answer that makes sense of my stupidity.
Anyone have other nominees for good customer service in town? |
Davis Vanguard Radio

Here is the link to the interview I did on the radio yesterday with Doug Paul Davis.
Several of you have said that you could not hear it in Woodland.
The entire program was on the county needle exchange program.

Skip Davies -- Mayor and Foreman
Posted 7/3/2008 @ 2:08 PM :: 0 Comments |
I mentioned yesterday that Skip Davies looked like he was ready to pour some concrete at the Clark Pacific ribbon cutting yesterday.
Doesn't he look like he is doing a safety briefing before the shift begins?

The folks out at Woodland Community College are jazzed. The WASC Committee declared that they were capable of being named a stand alone Community College. They are the 110th in California.
This is great for them and good for Woodland.
Here is the Daily Democrat article on the issue. |
Dave Flory is new staff member
Posted 7/2/2008 @ 9:50 PM :: 1 Comments |
For more than eight months I have had an opening in my county office.
I was looking for someone that would be completely dedicated to Woodland. Dotty and I found that person in former Woodland Mayor Dave Flory.
In a couple days I will share how we divide the office duties up.
Today was Dave's first day on the job. He went out to the Clark Pacific event, attended the fund raiser for the family of Deputy Diaz, and helped serve meals at the Wayfarer Center.
Between the three of us we are going to do some good stuff for Woodland. |

Clark Pacific -- Opening Today
Posted 7/2/2008 @ 11:17 AM :: 2 Comments |
We had a soft opening of the Clark Pacific Woodland plant this morning at 10am.
Flory was there. Skip Davies looked like he was ready to pour concrete.
Here are Dotty and Sandra. They really liked what they saw. I guess they are happy Clark Pacific is in Woodland. I am too.

Ok -- so what is the standard?

I am not sure what blogs are. Are they journalism? Crystal Lee is probably choking. Are they something elected officials should do? Helen Thomson is now choking. Are they just kind of in between?
I think they are probably in between somewhere but I am not sure exactly how to articulate it.
For the last couple years almost everyday I have read 10-15 blogs each day. I also read printed and on-line newspapers. It is something I like to do and helps me keep track of what is going on.
A few months ago one of my favorite people from Woodland wrote a letter to the editor in the Democrat ripping me about all the evil things I do. It was about a certain business coming to town that is going to employ about 300 people with good union jobs. I saw the letter to the editor on-line and wanted to make sure that my readers here saw it.
Almost always I link to the part of the Democrat I want to highlight. I am not sure how the Democrat feels about this but I justify it as increasing the readership on their site and pointing out my views on their stories and comments.
Well on the day this letter came out I got sloppy. I cut and pasted the content right into the announcement section on this site. I had something to do and needed to do it quickly. I should have linked to the website and guided people there -- and then ripped the writer for being a NIMBY.
Jim Smith saw this and sent me an e-mail pointing out that I had taken content from the newspaper. He was right. I corrected it as soon as I got back on my computer. The letter writer had sent content to the Daily Democrat -- not to me -- and the Democrat owned it. I stole content from the Democrat. I shouldn't have done it and won't do it again.
I think I have a pretty good idea of what I think is right and wrong on these things. It is more just an overall view. I don't pretend to be a journalist.
So then last night I am reading Bob Dunning's column in the Enterprise. He has a great piece about Greenwalds being on the ballot. It is very well done.
Here is the issue. In the piece he takes then Davis Mayor Sue Greenwald's comments directly from The People's Vanguard of Davis. I know that because I read the comments when she posted them on David's site. Clearly in the print edition he can't "link" to the Vanguard but doesn't Dunning at least need to mention where he took the quotes from. David is certainly more of a journalist than I am. He is actually trying to make money on his site with advertising just like the newspaper is.
If this happened to me I don't think I would really care. I am not making money on this. I am not trying to make money.
It would appear to me that there is something wrong with the way Dunning referenced the quotes in the Vanguard but I can't articulate exactly the rule that I would apply to these issues. |
